The media has evolved extremely fast in
the past five years. From the beginning with traditional media which was a
broadcast model of one-to-many to today’s social media which is many-to-many in
communication. The growth of media and how it delivers communication has broadened
immensely. From the beginning of social media, the email was one of the first
uses of the internet. The email allowed people to communicate easily with the
capabilities of sending messages to more than one person made it a powerful
communication tool. Emailing now has expanded to including mail lists but it
has its drawbacks. Social networking sites and online gaming took over as the
most popular use of the internet in 2008. This developed by new technology
outlets of communication on the internet with a broader group of people. As
discussion boards and web forums became popular modes of communication which
shows how users are firmly rooted to certain aspects of social media on the
Internet. Chat room then opened other outlets that allowed individuals ways to
communicate in real time with one another. AS this type conversation lead sometimes
to confusion among individuals and chat rooms brought interactive ways to
audiences with a certain focus on a topic. As social media evolves and new means
of communication through the internet continue to improve, I see media in the world
five years from now to allow people to collaborate and to continue to produce
new materials available to other users. The legal and ethical issues within
media will need to begin advancing as they are presently behind. I believe this
area will be a main focus to consumers in how their involvement on the internet
is perceived and utilized as intellectual property. Privacy within the social
media will be a revolving door as individuals continue to post personal
information on public sites. Sharing of information among platforms will
continue to grow as the amount of data or information will be processed among
individuals. Media companies will be
important for how people are able to access their information. These individuals
will access their news, entertainment and other media content through mobile
devices. According to Mobile Industry Standards, 56% of American adults are
smartphone owners (Source:
Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2013), and the number of US mobile
coupon users will rise from 12.3 million in 2010 to 53.2 million in 2014,
driven by the rapid adoption of smartphones (Source:
eMarketer, 2013). The statistics have shown the use of
smartphones will continue to rise and the use of the internet will be the main
source of information for all users. For media companies to comply with the
needs of society, they will need to continue to be on the edge with new
technology by offering to consumers what is needed in society.
